(Dr.) James Matthew Blythe was the oldest son of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. Born in the House of Dreams, he was Anne and Gilbert's second child. He was named after Matthew Cuthbert and Captain James Boyd. He was preceded by Joyce (†) and followed by Walter (†), Nan, Di, Shirley, and Rilla. Jerry Meredith and Jem were of the first to "go" in the Glen when recruits were needed for the war in Europe. After the war, he married Faith Meredith and had three children--Jem, Walter, and Anne. He also became a doctor like his father.
(Jem was excited about the proposal of going to France to fight in the war)
"We're the cubs—we've got to pitch in tooth and claw if it comes to a family row," Jem went on cheerfully, rumpling up his red curls with a strong, lean, sensitive brown hand—the hand of the born surgeon, his father often thought. "What an adventure it would be! But I suppose Grey or some of those wary old chaps will patch matters up at the eleventh hour. It'll be a rotten shame if they leave France in the lurch, though. If they don't, we'll see some fun. Well, I suppose it's time to get ready for the spree at the light."

Jem discussing the war with Walter)
